About Mark Millmore

I’ve lived in the parish of Holmer and Shelwick since 1999 before that I was living in Chicago, which was a lovely city by Lake Michigan and one of the largest cities in the U.S, incidentally in 1889; the first steel framed skyscraper was built in Chicago. Chicago in the 1990’s had many virtues but I also observed extreme contrasts between rich and poor; run down infrastructure, drive by shootings, metal detectors on the entrance to some schools and appalling health care for those who cannot afford medical insurance.

When I returned to the UK in 1999 and moved to Coldwells Road, in Holmer, it was like finding myself in a small part of paradise. Holmer has a rural character, with views of beautiful countryside but is within reach of the Hereford city.

In 2014, a year after my son was run over by a car in Perseverance Road, I became concerned about the speed of the rat runners along Attwood lane and Church Way and decided to join the Parish Council to see if I could do something about it.

I realised my skills in the IT industry (I was once Global Art Director of an American Dot Com company) could be used to help the Parish Council to engage with a younger generation of parishioners. So I built the Holmer and Shelwick Parish Council website with easy to use functions to keep people up to date with the Parish Council’s activities. This website became so successful that the Holmer and Shelwick website model is now used by over 80 parish council websites in Hereford, Worcester, Cambridge, Dorset and Shropshire. It also won a NALC star award in 2017.

Before my career in the IT industry I lived in Bristol and worked as a secondary school teacher in the early 1980’s. Then for the BBC as a scenic artist, as a set designer in the theatre and by the late 80’s my work as an artist and writer took up most of my time, which was spent travelling abroad, particularly in East Africa and Egypt.

My art works have been exhibited in many countries and are held in  public collections across the world. You can see example here.

Among my other interests is ancient Egypt; I’ve written two books on the subject ‘Imagining Egypt and ‘Ancient Egyptian Anecdotes.’
I also have a website called Discovering Egypt which I made as a teaching aid for schools around the world.
