The Flooding Pond in Holmer

The Parish Council decided, earlier in the year, to delay maintaining the pond. We had a plan of action and a parishioner who was willing to carry out the work at very reasonable rate.

However, it was said that the work could not be done because it might effect newts or some other amphibian creature

The Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act make it an offence to intentionally, or recklessly kill, injure, or take a protected species, or damage, destroy or obstruct access to structures or places used by protected species for shelter, breeding or protection.

I doubt we have any protected species in our pond but I’m not an expert.

  1. So many projects are delayed or cancelled because of potential threats to wildlife – yet invariably these species adapt to adjusted environments.
